Dr. Unang Mulkhan is a senior expert on business and human rights with extensive experience in integrating human rights principles into corporate governance, risk management, and sustainability practices. His work focuses on supporting companies and institutions in implementing Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in line with international standards and responsible business conduct frameworks. Through his advisory and technical work, he helps organizations identify, assess, and manage human rights risks in their operations and supply chains while strengthening compliance with evolving regulatory and ESG expectations.


Dr. Mulkhan has significant experience in conducting Human Rights Due Diligence across a range of high-risk sectors, including mining (coal and nickel), oil and gas, pulp and paper, palm oil, electronics, seafood, forestry, and conservation projects. His work includes leading human rights impact assessments (HRIA), designing corporate policies and grievance mechanisms, and supporting companies in developing effective remediation processes. He also provides technical guidance on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), stakeholder engagement, and supply chain accountability to ensure that business operations respect the rights of workers, communities, and other affected stakeholders.

  • Lead Researcher for research on Responsible Supply Chain on Seafood Sector in East Java, funded by OXFAM. (2024). 
  • Lead Researcher for research on Worker Voices in the Seafood Industry in Sumatra, Jawa, and Bali, funded by ISSARA Institute USA. (2024) 
  • Lead Research project on toolkit of responsible business conduct, decent work and skill development in the Electronics Sector in Indonesia, funded by ILO. (2024). 
  • A lead researcher on Aflateen+ Programme in Indonesia, Nepal and Pakistan using Randomised Control Trial with some elements of human rights and financial literacy, funded by Aflatoun International Amsterdam the Netherlands (2022 - 2024). 
  • Research team member of SINERGI on Scoping of Electronic Supply Chain in funded by ICF International (2023/2024), and Research team member of SINERGI on Scoping of Tobacco Supply Chain Research with ICF International (2023/2024).

  • The National Policy Expert for UNDP on SDGs Diagnostic Acceleration from July 1st to December 30, 2022. Scoping, monitoring, and evaluating the progress of the SDGs in Indonesia using UNDP Diagnostic Simulator on SDG gaps, interlinkages, synergy and trade off. This also includes multi-stakeholders dialogues on SDGs. 
  • A mentor/teacher for a course called co-design for Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Public Spaces and Services (CIPSS). The programme is organised by Lund University and is funded by the Swedish Institute within the framework of the Public Sector Innovation Programme. This programme focuses on increasing the capacity of municipal officials to co-design inclusive public environments and services. (2020 - 2024). 
  • Consultant for research and development of a Handbook on Localising Human Rights in the Context of SDGs in Asia Pacific, especially in the section of monitoring and evaluation, funded by Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI), Sweden (2019 - 2022). MEAL Consultant for Mercy Corps Indonesia on Agriculture and Farmers in 5 provinces in Indonesia, 2022. 
  • Lead consultant for conducting research on the social impact of COVID-19 in four provinces in Indonesia, funded by European Union (EU) and UCLG Asia Pacific, from May to August 2021. 
  • Lead consultant for conducting online training on monitoring and evaluation of SDGs to local governments, funded by United Cities and Local Government Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) in September 2021. 
  • An expert for local parliament of Bandar Lampung city in drafting local regulation on sustainable tourism, in 202: a resource person for analysing the integration of SDGs in the document of local spatial planning (RTRW) and mid-term local development planning (RPJMD) and analysing strategic environmental study (KLHS) of the Lampung province, in 2021; and an expert for the local development and planning agency (BAPPEDA) Bandar Lampung city on climate change and on analysing mid-term local development planning (RPJMD), in 2021. 
  • Lead consultant for Urban Analysis Report of the city of Pangkalpinang, funded by ACR+ Belgium and European Union (EU) under Climate Resilient and Inclusive City (CRIC) project, from June to December 2020.
