FIHRRST’s founder, James Kallman, was speaking at the Regional Conference on Aligning Corporate Sustainability with SDGs at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), Bangkok, Thailand on 20 May 2015. This regional conference was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the ESCAP Business Advisory Council (EBAC) and its Sustainable Business Network.
The aim of this Conference was to gather business views as input to the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development, as well as to provide input to the G20 work stream on inclusive business.
In his speech, James Kallman emphasized that Human Rights are the foundation of Corporate Sustainability and by respecting human rights companies will achieve a significant part of their Corporate Sustainability goals. He introduced BHRISC 2011 and GHRISC developed by FIHRRST, standards for companies and governments to ensure they respect human rights. BHRISC 2011 is a standard for implementation of a Human Rights Management System and assessment of specific human rights aspects for companies, and certification audit for auditors. GHRISC Indicators are used as a standard for implementation of a Human Rights Management System by governments.
The management systems required by these standards include commitment at the highest level to a policy of respect for human rights, implementation of human rights due diligence (assessment of human rights impacts, integrating the findings and preventing and mitigating impacts) and adoption of a remediation mechanism for human rights violations.
