Prior to commencing his work
with FIHRRST, Bahtiar Manurung had more than 16 years of professional
experience in both financial and non-financial audit, which included management,
environmental and human rights audit.
He was involved in the establishment
of business and human rights audit services of PT Moores Rowland Indonesia and the development
of human rights audit tools based on the United Nations Guiding Principles
on Business and Human Rights and the significant areas of human rights associated
with business operations.
Since 2015, Bahtiar has been
working for FIHRRST as Operations Director. He has been intrinsically involved
in the establishment of FIHRRST’s collaboration with the
Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry
of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, as well as with the Indonesian
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) in promoting the
concept of business and human rights in business.
Together with other FIHRRST
human rights experts, Bahtiar has assisted the Ministry of Marine Affairs and
Fisheries in preparing a regulation requiring fisheries business
actors to implement a system that ensures human rights are respected in their
operations. This collaboration with the Fisheries Ministry
has resulted in the signing of the Ministerial Regulation on the fisheries
human rights system on 10 December 2015 followed by the signing
of its implementation regulation on 23 January 2017.
With his expertise in Business and
Human Rights, Bahtiar has been invited to speak at a number
of business and human rights training gatherings and conferences organized by
organizations such as the Indonesia Global Compact Network, Shift (a
centre for business and human rights practice chaired by Prof. John Ruggie), and
the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
He has also been
a frequent speaker at business and human rights seminars organized by
government institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
the Republic of Indonesia, the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Marine
Affairs and Fisheries.
