Indonesia is among the top five countries in Asia that most in providing the death penalty sanction for perpetrators of criminal acts. This is revealed through research conducted by the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST) for the past month.

Based on the research by the FIHRRST researcher, Anastasia Herranz Lespagnol, throughout 2016 there are 124 executions of death penalties conducted in eight countries in Asia. The eight countries are Pakistan (87 executions), Bangladesh (10), Malaysia (9), Afghanistan (6), Indonesia (4), Singapore (4), Japan (3), and Taiwan (1 execution).

As of December 31, 2016, there are 141 countries that have completely abolished the practice of the death penalty in their justice system. These numbers include countries not executing in the last 10 years, although their legal system still contain the death penalty. "This means, the countries that eliminate the death penalty sanction in their legal system, continue to increase," he explained.

Meanwhile, to respond the research result, the former Attorney General, Marzuki Darusman, revealed that this is the time for Indonesia to stop providing the death penalty sanction. So far, the majority of countries all over the world have stopped to provide and execute the death penalty sanction.
