One of the FIHRRST’s founders, the well-known economist Dr. Dradjad H. Wibowo, has just published a research article under the title “When can physical distancing be relaxed? A health production function approach for COVID-19 control policy.” It aims to demonstrate how the health production function can be used to assess the state of COVID-19 transmission and to determine a risk-based physical distancing relaxation policy.
The study concludes that a short-run health production function can be used to assess the state of COVID-19 transmission and to determine a risk-based physical distancing relaxation policy. Given its simplicity and minimal data requirement, the approach is very useful for developing countries that are unable to formulate reliable estimates of the reproduction number R. Follow-up research from this study may include estimating an economically optimal date for relaxing distancing measures and the application of this method to other epidemics.
Although the study is still preliminary, not yet having undergone peer review, many have found the facts-based analysis given in the article to be critical in constructing needed strategy and strong recommendations. The study may be accessed at https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-87332/v1
